NHS Home Visits for Kids: Reducing Hospital Trips in Hampshire | COAST & CH@H Teams (2026)

Imagine a service that brings hospital care directly to your doorstep, saving countless children from unnecessary hospital visits. This is the reality for families in Hampshire, England, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative by the local NHS trust.

But here's the twist: instead of heading to the hospital, children under 16 receive medical attention in the comfort of their homes. The program, available in Portsmouth and Southampton, specifically targets respiratory and gastrointestinal issues, such as bronchiolitis, asthma, chest infections, viral wheezing, gastroenteritis, and tonsillitis.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust believes this approach will significantly reduce the number of children requiring hospital admission. The Portsmouth Children's Outreach Assessment and Support Team (COAST) serves Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, and South East Hampshire, while the Southampton Children's Hospital @Home Team (CH@H) covers Southampton City and South West Hampshire, excluding Avon Valley, Eastleigh, and Chandlers Ford.

Since its launch in 2022, the service has already assisted a remarkable 7,124 children, with a staggering 87% being under the age of 5. Even more impressive, over 91% of these young patients avoided hospital treatment altogether.

Chris Dowdell, a senior community children's nurse and member of the COAST team, emphasizes the program's goal: "We strive to keep children at home and provide families with the necessary guidance and support to manage their child's illness. Hospitals can be daunting for families, especially during the winter months when respiratory viruses are rampant. We aim to alleviate that anxiety."

Dowdell adds, "Our feedback indicates that many families would have sought help from GPs or hospitals without our service." The team closely monitors the children's conditions, ensuring they receive the care they need, especially if their health deteriorates.

Shanice Beale, a parent who used the service for her 12-week-old baby Myles, shares her experience: "Having this service is incredibly reassuring. Knowing that I can call them if I'm worried and they'll respond promptly is a huge relief."

And this is where it gets intriguing: Could this home-based approach be the future of pediatric care, reducing hospital congestion and providing a more personalized experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
