Unveiling Mars' Ancient Blue Past: A New Study Reveals the Red Planet's Once-Glistening Lakes and Rivers

These structures were found at elevations of 3,650 to 3,750 meters below the Martian surface reference level, suggesting the presence of a large ocean that stretched across the northern hemisphere of the planet.
The researchers estimate that the deposits were laid around 3 billion years ago, making it the period with the largest availability of surface water on Mars. This is intriguing, as previous estimates for the existence of a Martian ocean were a few hundred million years earlier. The study also suggests that these newly identified coastlines could be some of the most promising places to search for traces of ancient extraterrestrial life.
